Chapter 10

Remy

“How’s your grand-mère?” Rori asked once we were settled at her place, sitting in the living room on the couch.

She’d kicked her heels off at the door and had her legs curled beneath her as she stared at me waiting for my answer.

I quirked my brow as I turned in her direction. “That’s what’s on your mind right now?”

“It’s what I’d rather talk about right now,” she shot back.

I shook my head, chuckling.

This girl had some damn nerve.

“She’s cool. Grand-mère is a tough old broad, so that ankle fracture is really just getting on her nerves more than anything else. Thankfully, my pops was able to hire someone that’ll come by and check in on her, make sure she has everything she needs, can get to the doc, and all of that. Thanks for asking after her, but we’re not about to sidestep the elephant in the room tonight, baby. What the hell was all of that back there at the party about?”

Her head dropped as she groaned. I knew, just from the few occasions she’d been faced with uncomfortable situations while I’d known her, that Rori liked to overthink the hell out of a situation before dissecting it with anyone else. And normally I’d respect that. But I definitely needed an answer to let me know that I must have been tripping when I walked in and saw her hands all up on dude in a place they had no business being. I’d never had cause to question whether Rori’s motivations for being with me were truly genuine until tonight. After a few moments of silence, she finally raised her head to make eye contact with me.

“What you saw tonight is Elena once again getting me into some bullshit,” she said, then blew out a breath.

I’d entered the party venue and was momentarily stuck at the entrance as I witnessed what looked like my woman and her bestie’s husband sharing an illicit, intimate moment. Before I could snap out of my haze to figure out what was really going on, Elena had appeared, making a beeline to the same couple I was observing and soon loud words were being exchanged. Then Elena stepped nose-to-nose with Rori and that was enough to snap me into action to make sure Rori was good, whatever I’d thought I’d observed be damned.

Now though, I said nothing, wanting her to elaborate and when she did I felt like the biggest asshole for doubting whether what she felt for me was ever in question. That guilt quickly morphed into anger once she said that nigga likely would have tried forcing the issue if Elena hadn’t walked up to them when she had. Now, I was just about ready to get my ass back in my car and pull up on homie again, just to make clear that whatever he thought he could do to Rori he had sadly mistaken.

“You did right getting me the fuck out of there when you did,” I grumbled, feeling myself tense up at just the thought of being able to set his ass straight.
